All images courtesy of Eight50 Coffee, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Ethiopia as the granddaughter of a coffee farmer but raised mainly in Canada, <a href=\"https:\/\/eight50coffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eight50 Coffee<\/a> Founder Muna Mohammed had a profound experience when seeing coffee\u2019s origins for the first time as an adult.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was something that always fascinated me, but I didn\u2019t quite understand it,\u201d Mohammed recently told Daily Coffee News. \u201cI knew we drank coffee&nbsp;\u2014 I knew it was culturally integrated into our heritage \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t until I visited Ethiopia after graduating college that I got to understand the complexities of coffee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/10\/12\/three-questions-with-muna-mohammed-of-canadas-eight50-coffee\/eight50-coffee-bags\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-174014\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-174014\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-Coffee-bags.jpg\" alt=\"Eight50 Coffee bags\" width=\"1020\" height=\"1182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-Coffee-bags.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-Coffee-bags-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-Coffee-bags-535x620.jpg 535w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-Coffee-bags-129x150.jpg 129w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-Coffee-bags-768x890.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After witnessing harvesting, processing and the work that farmers put into production, Mohammed returned her previous home in Toronto, Ontario, with plans to more deeply engage with coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While simultaneously maintaining what would be a 14-year career in marketing, Mohammed began to devote much of her free time to learning about coffee. After another formative trip to Ethiopia in 2008, her desire to work in the industry grew, and in 2018, she began to put concrete plans together for Eight50 Coffee. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At long last, in 2020, Mohammed officially launched the coffee business in Ottawa.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_174013\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/10\/12\/three-questions-with-muna-mohammed-of-canadas-eight50-coffee\/eight50-chocolate\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-174013\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-174013\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-chocolate.jpg\" alt=\"Eight50 chocolate\" width=\"1240\" height=\"1863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-chocolate.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-chocolate-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-chocolate-413x620.jpg 413w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-chocolate-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-chocolate-768x1154.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-chocolate-1022x1536.jpg 1022w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eight50 recently launched a bean-to-bar chocolate bar line, as well as a line of canned cascara-based drinks.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think COVID helped because it was a time where I was like, \u2018It\u2019s now or never \u2014 I\u2019m going to launch this business,\u2019\u201d said Mohammed. \u201cBut I\u2019m glad I took the time that I did [beforehand] because I started to really understand how the supply chain worked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohammed drew upon her marketing background to develop a name for the business that may begin to tell a story and also lead to more questions. The Eight50 name references the year (850 CE) in which coffee was first discovered in the wild in Ethiopia, according to popular legend.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said Mohammed, \u201cI meet people all the time that think coffee comes from France or Italy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/10\/12\/three-questions-with-muna-mohammed-of-canadas-eight50-coffee\/eight50-drinks\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-174015\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-174015\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-drinks.jpg\" alt=\"Eight50 drinks\" width=\"1240\" height=\"825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-drinks.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-drinks-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-drinks-620x413.jpg 620w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-drinks-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Eight50-drinks-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohammed now sources Ethiopia Harar coffee from her family, and she works with a group called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technoserve.org\/blog\/in-ethiopia-coffee-creates-opportunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coqua Trading<\/a> to source coffee from other regions of the country. Brazilian coffees come from Atlanta-based <a href=\"https:\/\/bdimports.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BD Imports<\/a>. The latest Brazilian coffee comes from producer Neide Peioxoto, a woman in Minas Gerais.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to coffee, Eight50 Coffee has a new line of chocolate bars, each with its own unique sourcing story and art on the packaging to represent the individual countries. The cacao comes from Cameroon and Jamaica. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohammed also launched a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cascara harsha tea over the summer. Made with dried coffee cherry and infused with natural flavors, the sparkling RTD drink comes in two canned flavors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCascara is near and dear to me because I grew up drinking it,\u201d says Mohammed. \u201cI wish people started gravitating to coffee byproducts because there\u2019s a lot of opportunity to support farmers and diversify their offerings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s more from DCN\u2019s conversation with Muna Mohammed\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What about coffee excites you the most?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m excited to showcase coffee usage and coffee byproducts in sustainable ways. This year we launched our Trio Coffee Bean to Bar and Cascara Hashara, a sparkling coffee cherry tea that\u2019s made by repurposing the coffee peel. It\u2019s a beloved drink, commonly consumed in the eastern region of Ethiopia, that I grew up drinking. The possibilities of incorporating coffee in different products are endless, and I\u2019m excited to continue developing products that highlight coffee.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What troubles you about coffee?&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of coffee and the impacts of climate change are troubling. The reduction of coffee yield has become more frequent, yet it\u2019s still a crop consumers take for granted. I think we should be paying a lot more for coffee at the retail level. I believe farmers should continue to advocate and sell their coffee at higher prices. I hope to continue seeing the specialty coffee community advocate and continue to support these efforts, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What would you be doing if it weren&#8217;t for coffee?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would still be working as a marketing and brand professional. In many ways, I brought these skills into my own business at Eight50 Coffee. I\u2019ve always loved telling stories, creating, building brands, and working with product development.
