Courtesy photo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Chicago-area coffee company called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/u3coffee.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U3 Coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched this month with ambitious plans to connect consumers more deeply to the coffees in their daily cups.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming out of the gate with a wealth of engaging content and multimedia, U3 is building upon the traditional direct-to-consumer roaster model, offering coffees under its own name while also selling roasted coffee and related equipment from other brands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a national focus, the company is currently building out a roastery in Forest Park, Illinois.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary forces behind the startup are the wife-and-husband team of Kristi and Craig Ross, who decided to join entrepreneurial forces after cultivating successful careers in finance and healthcare\/pharmaceuticals, respectively.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wanted to do something that matters to both of us and that we bond over as a family,\u201d Kristi Ross recently told DCN. \u201cIt sounds plain, but we love coffee and felt it was something we could do together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_174821\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2023\/11\/20\/with-media-and-marketplace-startup-u3-coffee-builds-consumer-connections\/u3-coffee\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-174821\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-174821\" src=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/U3-Coffee.jpg\" alt=\"U3 Coffee\" width=\"1240\" height=\"1240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/U3-Coffee.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/U3-Coffee-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/U3-Coffee-620x620.jpg 620w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/U3-Coffee-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/U3-Coffee-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image by Michael Maes of Maes Studios, courtesy of U3 Coffee.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In creating U3 Coffee, the couple knew they wanted to use their media and storytelling acumen to build the brand and create an online \u201cecosystem\u201d of coffee for consumers and professionals alike.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristi Ross, who co-founded the financial media company Tastytrade, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/robertwolcott\/2021\/10\/05\/raising-thriving-companies--and-daughters-advice-from-billion-dollar-co-founder-kristi-ross\/?sh=75fa4b9d32c9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sold for $1 billion in 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been helping to lead the new company\u2019s media efforts. Those include instructional videos, educational blog posts and video interviews with coffee professionals, such as recent guests Ildi Revi, Brandon Bir and Sara Gibson.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe media arm is meant to amplify stories of the farmers, the coffee entrepreneurs, and the customer,\u201d Ross said. \u201cIt\u2019s what the three [in U3] stands for \u2013 uniting the world through coffee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The online marketplace, called the U3 Coffee Exchange, currently features a single-origin Costa Rican coffee under the U3 brand, as well as coffees from eight other specialty coffee roasters. The goal is \u201cto highlight and uplift\u201d other roasters, many of whom are featured in the video series. In October, U3 Coffee partnered with She\u2019s the Roaster (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/shestheroaster\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to sponsor roasting professional Zee Suphisara\u2019s attendance at the 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crgretreat.coffee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee Roasters Guild Retreat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once U3\u2019s physical location opens, the company hopes to facilitate a way for guests to tip coffee farmers, much like they might tip baristas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a <a href=\"https:\/\/loring.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loring<\/a> machine at its center, the roastery is currently scheduled to open next Spring. The Rosses hope to use the space not only for production roasting, but for coffee education and experimentation.
